Swept by a dream, I see the shade of her I love,
How fair she is, how tender, and how full of peace!
The moon now shines above,
And from her eyes the sorrows of my heart surcease.

She says: "Be happy, I am watching over thee,
And I will dry the tears that on thy eyelids start.
What though thy lot on earth may be,
Thy love for me is ever in my inmost heart.

But why so early didst thou leave the world below?
What joys thou hast lost here, what tears thou mightst have known!
What though thy love for me burn with so fierce a glow,
I wait for thee in heaven, for heaven is now my own."

I wake, and look around to find her shade has fled,
And though my arms outstretched to hold her fast I strain,
Vainly I seek my dead,
For she has gone, and will not come to me again.

I call upon the night to give her back to me,
The dark and silent night, the night that I love best;
And on the winds that sweep from off the sunless sea,
I send a kiss of love to find her place of rest.
